Belgian Minister Resigns After Climate Strike Controversy

Updated: Feb 6, 2019

Flanders Minister Joke Schauvliege resigns after claiming climate strikes in Belgium were "a set up"

The environment minister referred to the striking school kids as "truants" and claimed that their actions were "more than just spontaneous acts of solidarity"

The Belgian state security services have denied having communicated anything about this matter to the regional environmental minister

Is this a positive sign for the movement?

Is Joke Schauvliege's resignation a sign that the cracks are beginning to show in the political world's pretense of indifference towards the growing number of students striking from school to demand global #ClimateAction ? We'll have to wait and see. But it is definitely a sign that when enough of us come together we can have an impact on our leaders on a national -and potentially international- level, and there's definitely more where that came from

Since January 2019, we have been striking every week outside town halls and city/government buildings, demanding that the government takes action to fight the Climate Crisis.
